The Time for Augmented Advocacy

Technology, an undeniable influence in our lives, has unfortunately been a source of intellectual pollution that negatively impacts our homes and families. Smartphones are sometimes referred to as the brothel of the 21st century, primarily due to harmful algorithms embedded everywhere. However, there is a silver lining amidst this concern as we witness the rise of digital defenses that strive for the betterment of our society. One such powerful ally in this battle for decency is artificial intelligence (AI). While apprehensions about the implications of AI in our lives are understandable, it is important to recognize its potential as a force for promoting the health, safety, and advancement of a decent society.

Although chat models lack the critical thinking and creativity inherent in red-blooded human beings, they possess the remarkable ability to work tirelessly without experiencing physical fatigue or need for emotional renewal. Acknowledging the shortcomings of both entities we can use the best qualities of both when we work together. This combination of human wisdom and AI tenacity in work is officially termed Augmented Intelligence, a concept that holds promise in numerous domains. In the realm of combating pornography and sex trafficking, organizations like Epik Project and Street Grace have harnessed this potent union for the betterment of civilization.

An excellent example is Gracie, an AI developed by Street Grace. In just five months. Gracie has made significant strides, extending its reach to 25 states and 78 cities. In the process, it has engaged in over 54,000 conversations with individuals seeking to purchase sexual access to both adults and children, detouring their efforts. Notably, Gracie reported more than 6,000 potential predators to law enforcement agencies (Watt, 2023). It is crucial to acknowledge that the problem of sex trafficking constantly seeks new avenues for exploitation and continues to pose a significant threat. There is no shortage of individuals to exploit. This is why placating potential buyers is the most effective approach. However, addressing this issue requires an immense amount of manpower, which advocacy organizations cannot afford to keep up with these addictive and predatory groups. This is where AI-powered bots, like Gracie, excel. Augmented Intelligence programs, such as Gracie, possess the ability to identify slang and swiftly analyze vast amounts of conversational data in real-time. By doing so, it effectively dissuades potential buyers from engaging in exploitative industries. Additionally, Gracie has been trained to recognize and counter 15 different tactics employed by sex traffickers—a feat accomplished through extensive research conducted by the National Center on Sexual Exploitation, or NCOSE for short (Van der Watt, 2023).

While the advent of Artificial Intelligence, like any other major technological development, presents a double-edged sword, it ultimately falls upon humanity to determine its optimal utilization. AI can undoubtedly achieve predefined objectives efficiently, yet the responsibility of interpreting and engaging in critical moral and spiritual decision-making remains a privilege exclusive to human beings. Just as any tool can be a source of harm if misused, AI has the potential like fire to either burn the hands that wield it or provide nourishment to those it serves. However technology leaders, in collaboration with NCOSE, still emphasize the need for caution (Oliver, 2023). The efforts of these organizations demonstrate that there are indeed ethical and beneficial applications for this emerging technology.

By embracing Augmented Intelligence, we have an opportunity to leverage the strengths of both human intellect and AI capabilities in the fight against exploitation and for the preservation of a virtuous society. It is imperative that we approach this new era of technological advancement with a discerning eye and a commitment to ensuring AI's responsible and ethical integration into our lives.
